Ireland Campervan Road Trip and Photography- Day 1

For St Patricks Day weekend I decided to do something a bit different. My wife, youngest daughter and myself rented a campervan for four days and drove down to the south of Ireland to do a bit of exploring and some photography.

I had never done this before, but it had always appealed to me. Being able to drive to a beautiful remote location, to take amazing photographs then in an instant be with in a warm environment and make yourself a cup of tea sounded perfect. If you liked the spot you could even stay. No need to rush home to get the dinner on.

We left on the Friday morning and drove the three hours to Dublin to pick up the campervan. The van was perfect. It slept 6, so with just the three of us we had plenty of room. There was two bunk beds in the back and a double bed in a cabin above the drivers seat. The kitchen had a sink, a large fridge and a three ring gas hob. There was a toilet with a shower. Everything you needed for a home away from home. As soon as we got everything packed in we were off. There was a three hour drive to get to our first destination and sleep over.

For our first night we wanted to go to Hook Lighthouse which is in between Waterford and Wexford in the south east of Ireland. It looked to be an interesting place. I read that Hook Lighthouse is the oldest working lighthouse in the world. It is location at the end of a narrow peninsula looking out to sea so I was sure to get some dramatic photographs. By the time we got there we had missed the sunset by 15 minutes but we took the cameras out anyway and captured what we could before the light was completely gone. We did get a few good shoots.

That evening I evening when I stepped out of the camper to see if I could get some star photographs I was amazed with what I saw. Yes the stars were out in the millions in the sky but there was also three rotating beams of light that stretched from the light house as far as the eye could see. It was surreal. Hopefully some of the pictures come out. I then went in to have my first night sleep in a camper van, to be lulled to sleep by the sound of the ocean waves. It does not get any better than this!

To be continned...
